Abstract Ɩ Full Text

Perceived fairness in pay system has two critical features, namely procedural fairness and distributive fairness. Recent studies have shown that the capability of employers to propose and administer pay systems appropriately, including allocating pay and determining the value of pay in a fair manner, has a positive association with employees’ work-related attitude. Although this association has been well-researched, the role of perceived fairness as a vital predicting variable of work-related attitude, particularly towards job satisfaction and organizational commitment, has still not been thoroughly deliberated. Hence, this study fills this gap. Self-report survey questionnaires were collected from the employees of a public audit agency in Peninsular Malaysia. Smart PLS software was utilized to assess the quality of the research instrument and test the research hypotheses. The results of hypothesis testing confirm that perceived procedural fairness and distributive fairness in managing the pay system, are important determinants of job satisfaction and organizational commitment in the examined organization. Additionally,
this study offers useful guidelines for practitioners to improve the pay management system and proposes future studies.

Abstract Ɩ Full Text

The aim of this paper is to link envy at the workplace to social loafing and to examine the role of self-esteem in moderating this relationship. Data was collected via a survey questionnaire from 393 employees working in public and private organizations in Malaysia. Partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to test the hypotheses. The results show that the higher the degree of workplace envy encountered, the higher the inclination for members to exert less effort while working in a team (social loafing), and this relationship is moderated by self-esteem. In addition, it is found that the relationship is better for low self-esteem workers relative to those high in self-esteem. In terms of workplace envy and avoidance of social loafing, the research provides important implications. Organizations should etablish a supportive workplace that encourages employees to be more involved and practice openness and give continued support. In a team culture especially, managers must play an active role by paying attention and being more sensitive towards circumstances that induce feelings of envy at work. By implementing a proper system and control, tendency towards workplace envy and social loafing can be mimimized.

Abstract Ɩ Full Text

This study examines the effect of political connections (PCONS) on firms’ disclosure of forward-looking information choices in the context of developing countries. Using multivariate regression of panel data comprising 360 firmyear observations of non-financial firms listed on Bursa Malaysia between years 2014 and 2017, PCONS are found to be positively associated with disclosure of forward-looking information. However, such relationship only exists for non-financial forward-looking information. Using the stakeholder salience theory to further contribute to the body of knowledge, the strength of the connections suggests that a high composition of politically-connected directors on the board promotes greater information about the future in firms’ disclosure. The common connection through ownership of firms in  emerging countries suggests the effective role of institutional shareholders in improving forecasting activities through high disclosure of forward-looking information. The study suggests a better appreciation of the hierarchical role of politically-connected directors on the board of types of forward-looking information presented to the stakeholders.

Abstract Ɩ Full Text

Problematic internet use is prevalent among university students, and it has been associated with increased adverse health outcomes. The results of existing research are mixed regarding the effects of problematic internet use on health outcomes. To resolve this ambiguity, we drew upon the self-control theory and person-situation interaction model to propose trait self-control as a moderator in the relationship between problematic internet use and adverse health outcomes. The study participants comprised 273 students from both public and private universities in Nigeria. Results reveal that problematic internet use is a significant predictor of adverse health outcomes. However, we find no evidence to support our postulated Hypothesis that trait selfcontrol moderates the effects of problematic internet use on adverse health outcomes. Implications, limitations, and potential for future research are highlighted.

Abstract Ɩ Full Text

The purpose of this study is to explore the job seekers’ acceptance towards producing video resumes for the company’s video-based recruitment. The study aims to analyse the moderating effect of self-video resumes by experienced and non-experienced applicants’ in terms of their perceived stress and coping strategies in creating the videos when applying for jobs. The quota sampling method was used to collect data from four faculties in a private university. The conceptual model was developed with constructs consisting of perceived stress, problem-focused coping, self-efficacy, self-presentation and acceptance of video resumes. The model was validated by two-level confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Subsequently, the moderation effects between the two groups of applicants were computed to uncover different group behaviours. The perceived stress and problem-focused coping responses were found to be significantly related to self-presentations for video resumes. A direct positive relationship was also found between the applicants’ self-efficacy and their acceptance of video resumes. The results of the moderation analysis indicate a significant difference in perceived stress between groups but not in the problem-focused coping strategies.

Katakunci: Personaliti proaktif, kecerdasan emosi, proses kreatif, kemahiran pemikiran kreatif, pelajar IPT.

Abstract

Creative thinking is a compulsory added value within students of Malaysian Higher Education Institutions (MHEIs) in contributing to the innovative national development. The development of an individual who has creative thinking skills must begin as early as pre-school education and continue to be practised at the tertiary level. Almost all MHEIs have focused on the development of creative thinking skill among students in the teaching and learning structure through teamwork. Nonetheless, studies that specifically test the influence of teamwork composition, namely proactive personality and emotional intelligence of team members on the development of students’ creative thinking are rather scarce. Previous studies found that not all teamwork is able to produce great outcome due to the fact that there is no chemistry among team members. Thus, great teams not only have to choose the best members but they also need to have a composition of members that can collectively develop high level of creative thinking skills . Every team member must take part in the creative process that facilitates the development of creative thinking skills. This process encompasses several steps of activities namely identifying problems, finding information, coding and generating ideas and alternatives in problem-solving. The purpose of this study is to test the relationship between individual characteristics in team composition and creative process as well as to the extent of which the creative process can develop students’ creative thinking skills in teamwork. The study sample comprises 250 students from six Malaysian HEIs (40-50 questionnaires per HEI) with the questionnaires distributed online. The data from 242 respondents were tested using SPSS software (version 22). The findings of the study reveal that there was a positive and significant relationship between the proactive personality and emotional intelligence of the students and the students’ involvement in the creativity process. There was also a positive and significant relationship between the creativity process and the development of creative thinking skills.
